Thread: Bound-heart Lovespoon

This lovespoon is carved from Japanese maple featuring motifs of family significance to the client who commissioned it. The signature is a wounded (excavated knot in the timber) heart, bound with a gold cord. Other features include a swivel, from which the spoon hangs, a hanging lantern containing a captured ball, two gilded hearts within the twin bowls, the Welsh Dragon, Celtic knot-work, a Celtic cross and a puffin. On the reverse side the spoon features a number of small hearts representing family members, a book and quill pen, acorn and oak leaves and a rugby ball.

It is finished with thinned polyurethane, polished dry with rottenstone using cloth and brush and finally polished with wax. The gilded features are finished with micaceous acrylic ‘gold’ paint and 24 carat gold leaf.
