Buddha Face Practice
I thought some might like to see my first attempts at carving a Buddha face (face, not head - because i'm not confident enough on doing the ears yet....)
I'll be updating it as i carve some more over the next few weeks, but here's my first one in huon pine
Unfortunately i mucked up the spacing of the features and the mouth a little so he looks a bit more like a sleepy Japanese businessman than a buddha....but ya gotta start somewhere haha
Lessons learned for the next one - be more careful with the layout for the features and get the rough levels of everything right before getting caught up in the details

Some very subtle changes, but a bit of extra refining seems to have yielded an improvement to the overall look
Defining the eyelids a little more, evening up the width of the nose just above the nostrils, and refining the mouth a little

With a few more verrrrry minor tweaks i've pretty much finished the first practice face and am now onto the second one

Slightly bigger this time and a long way from finished but its starting to take some shape...i seriously mucked up the eye so i'm just sort of winging it on that note and trying to get something that looks halfway acceptable as far as thats concerned.

Also not super happy with my proportions on this one, so thats definitely something to watch out for when i carve the next one after this.
The mouth on this face i think is an improvement on the last one though, so that's a nice bit of progress....practice practice practice

As an update to the last post, tonight i finished carving the other side of the face and fitted a set of glass and crystal eyes (made from a broken lightbulb and more painstakingly....from a quartz pebble - note to self...never attempt lapidary work without the right equipment!)
Trying to recreate an aged look i repeatedly wet and sanding back the surface to cut into the grain, then blackened it using watered down black and brown acrylics and by carefully holding matches under it to deposit a generous layer of soot.
A few fancy bits of pierced and gilt copper i made ages ago and its starting to look a bit more like its supposed to
Lots more learned from this practice run, so hopefully the next one turns out better!
Also thought i should include a photo of what i'm building up to....gotta have goals
