    Default wood for carving

Your post does not specify what size the stamps are but I assume they are small. If they are designed for use on paper as art work and not for constant use then Paulownia would be suitable and easy to work with as it is a relatively soft timber similar to WRCedar. I have Paulownia in many sizes up to 100 x 200 mm that could be used for carving.

If you get stuck I have some Chilean myrtle, White Beech, Walnut, Qld Maple or, I think, some huon lying around. But what sizes do you want is the question?

    Cheers

    losting:
there are two possible carving processes
    1. on the face of the timber with the grain showing as more-or-less parallel lines. That's more or less wood carving.
    2. If you want to do things like Durer and Escher, most of that was end-grain wood engraving.

Ha, ha. I nearly got banned once for thinking what I am right now. But at least at my place you can have Weizyboy start up his chain saw on a Sunday without having a neighbour coming over to complain about " their goes the neighbourhood."

I will agree to put one on providing Robson agrees to come.

If the winter storm weather gets much worse, I might have to do that.

While their may be other places in Brisbane where you can get wood suitable for Woodcarving and Sculpture the place I go to is lazaridies on the North side of Brisbane not that far from the Brisbane airport turn off but in the other direction.

When I was doing my life size nutcracker Soldier that is where I went to. I used Jelutong which was perfect for my needs. However, I had to buy it in lengths. The piece i got was 200 mm wide X 50 mm thick and 3.6 metres long.

It was more then I needed but i then had a good supply for any other carvings i wanted to do. They say lazaridies is not the cheapest but they usually carry the good wood that specialsts need. My piece came to about $200 and I felt that that price was ok especially since the carving I did would have had an all up value of over six hundred.

To do the torso I had to glue five pieces of Jelutong together so I could carve that back to a finished depth of approx 220 mm. You cannot see the joins.

LAZARIDIES are on the net, so look them up. Unfortunately, you may have to by a length as I am not sure they sell offcuts, but you can ask them. maybe the cost is not the main thing, the wood is, so then just bitwe the bullet and get it.

They will recut the length for you so you can transport it home in a car. My 4WD can fit in a 2.7 , length so they cut to that size for me with the left over 900mm.

    Good luck

I live in NE NSw where a lot of the wood is similar. I salvage nearly all my timber - stuff wased up by creeks are often good if they've been in water a long time or buried in sandy or gravelly banks. I keep a little SHARP pruning saw in my car for that odd piece that road crews have cut up. Camphor laurel is a beginners delight and good for seals, I'd imagine, due to the flowing lines you can get. You might spot one near a park that a storm has tossed off, or a neighbours. Avoid hard woods like eucs and most pines, except cypress and hoop (though still a challengs they are mostly worth it. The wood of most fruit trees are good but often difficult to season well - mostly due to the fact they are small: wood that is large can be cut so that the wood doesn't move and split open. I'm sure you know this. Get curious. Discarded old furniture can have great relief carving possibilities or chunks that are big enough to do 3D with.

If you are ever down toward Nimbin give me a yell. I have enough to share.

If you want to use Paulownia then I can post you whatever sized timber you decide is suitable and sell it in lengths of 1 metre so it complies with Aust Post limitations. P & H for posted timber is $8.25 plus the postage.
