Carousel carver
Hi I am a new boy on the block. Retired pattern/mode lmaker . In my spare time i do a little carving mainly carousel horses adorned with flowers sashes guns etc etc. At this time i am trying to locate a couple of super feet of English Lime or American Basswood for a smaller carving project. I can obtain some offshore at a reasonable cost however the freight costs are very expensive at 3 or 4 times the timber cost .Prior to Lazarides Timber ceasing business they were holding a quantity of Lime which i assume was auctioned off .Question does anyone know who may have purchased this timber ? Assume it would have been a Brisbane timber yard .Any advice appreciated

I can't help with the Lazarides timber but Trend Timber in NSW has a bit of lime - just about 6 or so carving block from memory. Fairly good size blocks but I didn't look closely re quality.
Apologies for unnoticed autocomplete errors.

If you import it, please let us know how that works out.
Just out of curiosity - is there some reason it must be lime ? Is there no locally-available timber that would suffice ?Apologies for unnoticed autocomplete errors.

Hi Carousel Carver and welcome to the forums.
Lazarides timber went, mostly, to Carba-Tec in Brisbane, as they now work with one of the sons to add timber pieces to their trading stock. I have no idea if the Lime is still there or not.
Also, the Market Place on these forums is free to place a wanted to buy advert (or any other non-commercial advert). Why don't you try there and see if anyone has any for you? Forums prices tend to be very reasonable.
Good luck
David

Like a lot of wooscarvers i consider Lime the best of all carving timbers if you are not looking for fancy grain . The old woodcarvers of Europe used it for church statues etc . I required it for a very fine detailed carving and now settled on apiece of Huon Pine Jelutong also carves very easy however again lacking in grain detail.Iam still considering the question of import.
