Thanks, undie. "Ebonizing," you call it. I made some. Tried it. Stinks like yesterday's chips.
The most common woods for their furniture would be the Oaks (Quercus) = lots of tannins. I suppose the solution would have been iron acetate but no ideas what the tannin reactions would be. Hickories (Carya sp.) and Elms (Ulmus sp.) were used also. Going further west and north, the veg. changes with a bigger softwood component (Spruce, Pine & Fir), low in tannins.
