    I think I have decided to go with a sand ripple look and not worry so much about actual grainy sand...

    Probably a wise decision, but the fear is that the rippled sand will read as water without he addition of colour.

    I will be using a different timber for the base. perhaps the colour difference will be helpful???

    I'm not sure the colour difference will pull it off, I think adding a couple or even one correctly positioned flowing underwater weeds would force the perception of it being underwater.
