Carved Mantel Section1
This is a section of a mantel I carved. The entire mantel is 14'-9" long. This segment is about 22" long. The motif is an underwater depiction of aquatic life in a stream bed. The lighting was designed to create an illusion of life under the surface.

Fantastic detail and the lighting really adds to the over all effect. Any chance of a shot from further away showing things in context?

Lovely piece, nice sense of movement inn the fish and water, is the lighting for the photo or is it part of the normal display of the work?

The home for which the piece was designed, has since been totally remodeled. But the original mounting of the mantel included a candle-levered header that I incised on the bottom portion to receive a string of bayonet lights spaced 4 inches apart. When the lights were mounted and turned on with a dimmer switch, the undulating surface of the carving created the effect you see in the picture.
The lighting sceme was quite effective at night over the massive fireplace and surround bookcases on each side. Unfortunately, the piece is no longer part of the home. New owners remodeled the home and the piece was removed. I have it in my studio now. But the lighting scheme is gone.

The mantel is comprised of Basswood 2x6 's laminated together to make a beam. I haven't used this method for years. I now order 20 ft lengths 4 inches thick of ramdom widths.
