    Default Carved pliers

    Hello,
This is an on-going project that has kept me enthralled for a year or so, and so far there are 12 pieces. I have exhibited them a few times, and mostly they get a good response, but I don't want to part with them separately so no sales so far!
They are plier-like objects carved or shaped from Hoop pine mostly, although one or two are from Kauri, and one is from Mediterranean cyprus, which was very nice to work with. There are additions of rose thorns or privet on several.
The primary shaping is done on the bandsaw, although I drill the pivot seat in each half before I start, using a Forstner bit. Rough shaping on a Linisher, followed by rasp and files, sometimes carving gouges, and then sandpaper. The two parts are joined with a hollow rivet which I've peened from old copper tubing (fridge, or brake lines?).
The inspiration is a reflection on relationships, having been on an interesting journey lately! Each piece has to do with a stage in a relationship, and titled as such.
Why the plier motif?? Can't really answer that, just seemed appropriate. Maybe its about manipulation, maybe about instruments of torture!! Hope you enjoy.

    Cheers,
    Andy Mac

A close up of several pieces, with original sketch next to them.

Instrument of Regret, includes rose thorns.
Instrument of Acceptance, the most recent one.

    And another couple.

Instrument of Wounds, includes whittled Privet twigs.
Instrument of Separation, in Cyprus with rose thorns, and opens not closes when handles are squeezed.

They nearly all work as a pliers do, a couple are bound up, but that's the plan!

    Cheers,
    Andy Mac

Cool, I love the whole idea and the execution

    Possibly a concept of manipulation?
A very thorough exploration of the "pliers" design.
At the same time, I sense that you are not done with this by a long shot.

Onya Andy, thanks heaps for showing, I like 'em as they are but I think they look very castable (nor sure if that's a word) in metal too.

Yes I have thought about that too, in aluminium. I had some stuff done a few years back at Urban Art's foundry at Eagle Farm. Love the stuff! here's a peak at some of it. The original was in industrial plasticene, with a real zipper and silk inserted. the silicone mould was accurate enough to pick up the weave.

    Cheers

    Very cool! Different! I like!

Maybe it's my mind in the gutter, but the top right pliers in the first picture clearly talk to me about the physical consumation of a heterosexual relationship

I second the idea of having them cast!

Fast forward 200 years, and someone on this forum is posting pics of them, and asking what they were used for ...

    Cheers,
    Andrew

    Great fun!
    .
I know you believe you understand what you think I wrote, but I'm not sure you realize that what you just read is not what I meant.

what if the hokey pokey is really what it's all about?
