Aha! If I remember correctly I was somewhat instrumental in fostering its creation... and didn't even know its nickname!

    One way maybe to ,
pour a crowned concrete pad , raised a bit above ground level , with 3-4 sizable galved steel rods set about 600mm into it , and about 600mm out .
Bore the 3 or 4 holes into the base of the stump to take the rods snugly , as far as you can , cut the galv steel to suit , and plonk the pole onto them .

    Default starfish WIP

I am working on these as christmas presents. I am planning to put rare earth magnets from hard disk drives underneath and give the to the family as fridge magnets. Have to put a finish on them first. I am thinking of hard shellac. I will post more soon.

Thanks. I haven't finished sanding them. I did a quick pass on one with 320 grit to see how they might come up and I think the grain will look good once I bring it up. I want to shape a few more first. I am thinking I will do some based on diatoms as well. These are my first carvings and I was very pleased how the forms developed. I didn't really know how they would turn out but the pictures of starfish grabbed me. I did these with a kutzall bit in the dremel. I tried the riffflers from carbatec but they were hopeless. The just get stuck and there's no flow to the shaping.

    Cool

First time I´ve dropped in here for quite a while.
    Just a couple of comments:
    Artesano´s work is always inspiring
Love the whimsical nature of underfoot´s work
Iggy´s work is first rate but I think he needs to diversify
Clare´s neddies are wonderfolly El Grecoish.

Carvers on this forum are as talented as any in the world as far as I have seen from my travels.

    Donna,

I am a bit new to carving, tried chip carving and sort of liked it, but the relief carving you showed is what I really would like to do. I have made some cradles for my children's children and wanted to do some relief carving on the headboards. I was hoping to get some tips too. I have no idea where to begin.
