Nice work Iggy. You have a very original style! What was the timber like to carve, as opposed to sand?

F&E, good to hear you are on the mend

This one was mostly file and Dremel with Burr the timber was so hard it kept blunting the tools too quick. I have another Jarrah piece WIP and some bits glued for a third design but they can wait till my arm recovers from sanders cramp

probably should post this in the metal thread, (but at the moment there is still more wood than machine bits)
"Icarus" would have made this if he had access to a machine shop instead of just wax and feathers,
WIP, long way from finishing, needs more metal, and I will tear open parts of the wings to show sub structure.
torso is in Qld myrtle, aluminium wings built over pine patterns, wingspan about 1200mm.

love the moral of the "Icarus" mythology, where nobody should aspire above their station in life, but he just keeps on trying and trying,
This is "Icarus" test flight no.7

what if the hokey pokey is really what it's all about?

Impressive, as usual. He's trying to fly out of the closet, is he?

You might have noticed the absence of . My apologies if it appeared to be a cheap joke, that is the way I interpreted to be the meaning of the melodramatic pose and the highlighting of some specific details in contrast with the amorphous face.

Many thoughts whirling around about it Undy, you have certainly have got the torso going well and show great skill in connecting the fandangled winged machine. How about some percy perspex wings?

spent some more time on me flyin friend,
added another half a sewing machine and about a kilo of old adding machine,
polished up the wings and chopped a section out of the left one,
    lacquered the torso then sandblasted,
if I include the base, theres still more wood in it than other stuff,
so I won't post in metal yet

what if the hokey pokey is really what it's all about?

Amazing tension in the lower back to counter-balance the weight. Beautiful

The wing striping has worked well, tying in with the contorted body now. The golden light in the first picture at first gave me the impression that you had coloured the aluminium wings. It may be worth investigating the effects of chemicals on aluminium when scorched with a blow torch or applying some acid here and there. The wing flapping contraption's extra weight and complexity adds more tormention to the tension or more fraction to the friction. Wispering, quickly, imho, the rivets in the wings need to be smaller. I don't know why I suggested percy perspex wings, the aluminium works better, especially now we see the inside structure, I suppose I was wondering how to make them more frail which you have now done. What's the go with dicing the body? It's an interesting notion that your Icarus could be either in a moment of falling apart or coming together.

Would you mind telling more about what you use for the sandblasting?
