First go at carving
My 8 year old grandaughter has a thing about dolphins, so downloaded some inmages from the internet and started chipping away at an old Redgum post. Then SWMBO said she would like a larger version about 250 mm high. Think i am hooked on carving now!

Hard Maple Bear
I carved this several years ago. Its from a hard maple offcut I got out of the free bin at the Woodsmiths. Before they moved to Lusher Rd.

Hi,
I noticed now that there was this subforum for woodcarving after I posted some pictures of my first woodcarving on the woodwork pics subforum. Maybe it should be moved here but for now here is the link to the post with pictures http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com...ad.php?t=51812

this thread has been a bit quiet lately,
hope it's because you're all too busy carving.
anyways, this is a piece I'm working on at the moment
its tricky to get decent WIP pics but here goes
1- lam 2 bits of 4 inch cedar
2 + 3 -roughing out
4- before assembly

next bit
loosely assembled, and lying on what will be a silky oak pillow
at the moment I'm trying to carve the negative shape of the
piece so that it fits snug in the pillow (a bit tricky)
can you make out what it is?
It's a twisted naked violin girl , of course.
post a pic when it's done
cheers underfoot

Remember that little hat??
Well, here's the bloke that owns it. Ol' 'arry is a bit of a loner so got himself a job as a Jackaroo on a station 'round 30 miles northeast of the Black Stump <grin>.......................
Actually, he measure 3 inches from the ground to the top of his hat,and is carved from jelutong. His saddle is carved from a single piece of brown tulip oak as is his frying pan and swag/bedroll. His horse is carved from baltic pine, and the axe is aluminium with a jarrah handle......reins and bridle are made with leather, some fusewire and a couple of small rings from an old cheap necklace.....the fire is charcoal and wood over cheap red glass beads and imitation rubiesfrom junky earings....the lot piled on a tiny round mirror from a parrakeets' toy to aid in reflecting light to give the "hot coals" effect

Snapper
I finally finished a cabinet for a friend and had a chance to play with the snapper.
The Queensland maple has great figure for the snapper.
It was good to work with chisels, arbortec and the new Makita die grinder.
It sander to a very smooth finish.
I have just put on one coat of Cabots Danish oil.
Wipe on - wipe off.
The figure popped nicely.Scally
