I put things aside and come back to it later, sometimes you see it in a different light

Thoughts, sometimes I push through and come out the other side, other works dangle around my workplace like orphans, given a glance now and then, waiting. Take it down to the sea and nail it to the wooden breakwater for the the winter tides and storms or sand blast it. Ugly, might add a few red paper roses dipped in epoxy
It's actually been worked on some more since those pics were taken but my daughter has taken off with the camera, she promised it will be back next weekend to shoot my entry in the big Olive challenge.

hi SPIRIT. i have a wood worker friend that makes custom furniture and he helps me out with laminating and sawing and things like that. he gave me this piece of birch. when he first gave it to me he said it was a yellow birch burl slab. so i thought great my first try at carving a burl but when i took it back to show him what i made with it he said it wasnt an actual burl but some other type of growth.but it was a little difficult to work there were some very hard areas and some soft parts too. i even seen a few sparks when i was grinding. its about two feet in diamaiter so around 60 centimeters i didnt really have any real plan as to what i was going to make. just started carving faces as thats what i like to do best and then put them all together somehow thanks for looking chris.
heres what it started as

So how big is your carving Spirit? Did you decide what you were going to carve before you got your wood? I had hoped there were more carvings on this forum, but carvers seem to be in the minority around here. My dad does relief carvings, but not many these days, he turns 80 this year. I am starting to learn, not sure if I will take up the relief carving, but at least I will learn to master the chisel and grain relationship. So little time and so much I want to do. Here are a couple of his carvings, his friend is a cabinetmaker and dad does some carving for his furniture sometimes.

150mm Long 50 high 50 wide
yes l had it well planned out way before l got the wood .The hardest thing about the whole carving was getting it to fit to the wood and tring to stay to scale at the end l had about 50 or so scetches. l really think if you wont to be a good carver you should go to a art/drawing class.
Your dad's carving look well done l haven't done any carving like that yet but l have to make a picture frame with relief carving in it
just got my slab off calm just tring to think what l will make with itsmile and the world will smile with you

My slab is still finding its way here, such a long trip for it from down there, have been thinking what I will make out of it. Funny when you have a yard with wood spread out all over it, and you look forward to one little piece arriving. (I am building a house and have bought lots of 2nd hand timber over the last year or so). I looked at the peice of olive when I got it, and looked out at my timber piles and laughed, then spent 3 days plus working on it.

well done spirit, great piece
(you would have won if it wasn't for those other two pesky entries)
here's a couple of pics of wip and muse,
the youngest of the locals tried to nick my piece twice but he couldn't fly very far with it and would eventually drop it.
I was thinking as he was sitting up a tree with it, how was I going to explain this to the forum?
what if the hokey pokey is really what it's all about?
