Great pics in post #62 Harry, love to see more of your work.
Watson, are you really sure you want people on the net telling you what to do with razor sharp tools , sounds like a new extreme sport.
' Distance carving by committee' (count me in by the way) ...
Just to keep the show and tell alive , heres a couple of pieces from wayback.
cheers underfoot

Wow underfoot!! That's wonderful work, what's the timber used on the bird skeleton.? Is it pieced together?
Cheers, gotta goAndy Mac

oops again
posted pics on the wrong thread didn't I
The bird skeleton was made for a competition a number of years ago
you were given a chep pallet and you could make whatever you liked,
as long as you only used the material in the pallet
I'm not sure what timber it was but it was hard and cranky.
each bone was made separately (except spine) then pinned together with pallet nails.
I rough shaped with arbortech, then angle grinder with 36 grit flexible disc,
then finished with a course burr on a die grinder.
looks better in pic than up close.
cheers underfoot
ps. makita have released a die grinder for about $110

Thanks for the info Undy, Hints will be dropped for fathers day . You must have a good eye for 3D form realisation as is evident in both the skull and bird skeleton especially considering it was made from a pallet, good on ya.
Teamed up with Andy Mac you would raise hell I reckon.

Thanks for the feedback folks,
Harry72 the window effect was unintentional,I didn't notice it till the pic
was developed (pre digital) and yes the background would be better unwrinkled.
HarryII, as far as 3D form realisation goes, there's a couple of tricks,
among other things, I collect bird skulls and bones (sounds morbid doesnt it) so I have lots of reference stuff. (bird skulls are really good carving excercises) that and a chook carcass from the butcher.
I also have a human skull for reference.
Spirit, I pin a lot of stuff together, mostly I use threaded rod of various
sizes, mainly because I bought heaps of it cheap at auction once.
theres no real secret though. If I have a tricky join that I have to pin,
I drill a hole in one side and scratch a bit of chalk in the hole, when I
press the two pieces together the chalk residue will show where to drill the matching hole.
cheers underfoot
ps other peoples skills always seem more mysterious than your own.
