Thanks for your comments,
As yet I don't have much in the way of carving tools.
Rough cut the shape on the band saw.
Then chip away with standard wood chisels, half way through the Dolphins bought a Hirsch 3117-12 carving chisel, which was a huge improvement.
Do the final shaping with a cheap set of riffler files. Have also made a number of profile scrapers out of old 8 inch warding files.
Sand a lot of the curved surfaces with 1/2' sander belts used as a strop.
Do most of the final sanding from 400 to 1500 grit, inside a plastic bag ,whilst watching TV.
Am going to lash out on some long bent carving chisels, as soon as I can decide on which ones to get!

been carvn bout 10 years now spose, and consider myself a novice. I just use chisels to make the wood go where I need it to go and sand most of the marks made by them so I don't really think I am a true carver.
I think the nut things mentioned are my Redgum and Huon hearts thst I carve in spare time relaxing.
The fishy looking things are made from some old Oregan I had lying around. They relate to either net floats or lures but their tending more to the lure side as I want to put copper wire through them, take them down the beach and suspend them from and old wooden sea wall so when the tide come in it will sand blast them and make the copper go green and stain the wood. Oregans good for sand blasting because, I dont know what your call it, but running with the grain there is alternating soft and hard "veins" that break down differently when sanded. I helped the sand blasting process by grinding the soft bits out with a round headed dremel bit. I'm also thinking of hiring a cement mixer and throwing in all the bits and pieces I want weathered with sand, salt and a few round rocks.
That table, I got in a lot of trouble with that as I wasn't suppose to sell it as it was considered not for sale unbeknown to me, it's a long story, don't want to gstir it up up again When the draw at the front is opened and closed it would operate a chime at the back. I love those wind up musical boxes and their musical mechanisms and I've seen this book with the most wonderful pictures of mechnical wooden toys it would make your jaw drop.
I like my nicky nacks around me in a sought of ordered chaos, comprising of works in progress, failures, jigsaw pieces, found objects, tools, nostalgar etc etc, it keeps me company, they are my friends, well most of them anyway. Underfoot, Underfoot what a place you work in, let there be light my son, let there be light, wonderful things to see, thanks for the pics . Clever jig you made, I've come up against a similar situation, but as usual thought I didn't have the time to make a jig which is a mistake mostly, I've got to learn to weld! Boats reoccur in my work and in a lot of others, it would be good to get a lot of people and their boats together, it would make great video/photo.

Hat
Thanks Arty, will put the Drizabone on the back burner for now, have just finished a saddle for the horse of the bloke that owns the hat
Ohno, yes that was my finger....seemed like a good way to indicate size.....I'm convinced that carving is a disease closely related to Terminal Insanity
