    Default First ever carving....

Hi All, well yesterday I made my first attempt at carving, I gotta say it was great fun. Queit and peaceful no dust, no screaming machinery.... I could get used to this!

Anyway, sorry about the crappy pics, I gotta say the final product looks a lot better in real life.

Timber used was Melunak, I'd love to know how it rates as a carving timber and I found there was a lot of grain changing going on. I gave it a quick wipe with linseed oil and only a quick hand sand.

Anyway thanks for looking, any feedback appreciated..

Always wanted to do one of those. I'd be happy with that for a first attempt. Well done.

Perhaps make the ball a little more ball-like, the talons are very expressive!

Great to see you put your toe in the water. It is a bit daunting for a new carver to come on here amongst some of our Artisans.

But we all have to start somewhere and we do not have all the same background pre-carving, so some like me, are coming from a very low base. But, as you get into it hopefully you will be able to draw on some outside experience to help.

We have a few newbies here now so keep pushing and showing us your journey. I think you will find this place can be more than Show & Tell, but also a place where information and ideas can be shared by the more experienced to help and guide us through the maize.

You have taken the first and hardest step.

    Well done!

Looks pretty impressive to me. Don't know the timber so I can't comment on that but grain is the bug-bear of all carvers. Not like running stuff through a saw bench. With all those curves you have to pay attention to the grain.

If you are doing furniture you may need to spend a bit more time with the sand paper, getting all the chisel marks and scratches out before you put on any finishes. This is less important with some other forms of carving but it really shows up in furniture.

    Default Familiar feet.

Nice work . I just finished repairing and restoring 8 African handmade dining chairs with feet like that. Some kind of dark soft wood that was very easy to work.

    Thanks everyone for the feedback.

I have enough Melunak for the small footstool so I'll be attempting to make one starting this weekend. I'll post a WIP thread when I have something to show for my efforts.
