    Default Making carving tools

I remember reading a thread about making carving tools from files etc. Haven't been able to find any info anywhere on this. Anyone have a site/link on making carving tools?

    Hi tiger,
There are some threads about making chisels and other stuff from scratch, and some discussions about files being a suitable stock for them. I have made a set of turning tools from old files, but would be reluctant to make something that is struck, even after removing the grooves completely before retempering. Chance of them cracking or sending shards about. My choice would be recycled springs, like small leaf springs or coil springs from car suspension. That way you are starting with an alloy designed for shock and flex, unlike a file.
I have made a few carving tools with limited success, the main problem getting an even "V" or "U" on the anvil. A decent swage block or fuller set would be helpful. Whatever you do, make the bevel and sharpen them on the outside of the "V", the inside is just too hard to get right!
A good place to start is to get your hands on Alex Weygers 'The Complete Modern Blacksmith', with step by step instruction on making wood and stone carving tools from recycled steel, including tempering.

    Good luck!
