??? I thougth that you were going to get the girl emerging from the 'tree' already in the hands but still being part of the tree, that is, not fully carved in the round. As everybody has already said, the 'roots' look great.
There should be enough wood there, hopefully. The proportions would be roughly those of the pic. That's my 2 bob worth, it's going to be great anyway.

I prefer the tree-root idea you started with, and the pictures at post #16. Of course you will need to develop branches and they could form a figure of, say, a woman or an animal.
The figure could be formed as a space inside the twined branches.

its funny you posted that l was in the shed today seeing if she could fit inside the hand with branches around her
also started making a tree trunk with branches the canopy has be stumped a bit at the mo

finished the woman but her holding a tree was the link to the root part(just sitting there so to see what it looked like ) also made a small carving of two hands to go in her hands that looked good also but that is in the shed somewhere

going to put some more work into the tree idea (ghost gum)
and tubby can stand by herself

Got back into this carving ,just in case there is still anyone following this project ,l will tell where im at

there is a lot of ideas floating around my head on how to finsh this carving and l have tried a few.
THis is the new one ,think of a flower bud opening
l have a metal tree l made a while ago, the big hand will go on three branches and the smaller one on one branch
The new carving stands 60mm , it can fit inside the larger hands is another way of doing it

Move my Carving Chair 2000 in the sun and spent a few nice hours having a carve today

good to see and hear that your on the go with your artwork SPIRIT it all takes time doesn't it? It would be good to be able to push on the imagination button at will wouldn't it? Just a few questions:

I don't want to get personal or nuffin but did you, or have you a broken leg?

The golfbag cart seems to be missing something, is the leg rest interchangable?

The bike, the golf cart and the Carving chair 2000 are all in close proximity, will they all end as one Carving chair ????

Are yes the 2000 ,as you well know the 2000 swivels around ,see the foot rest on the side has got a bit of spring in it ,good for when lisening to music .The rest at the front extends out to give that coffee table feel to it
The chair came out of the shed to catch some rays lucky it is made to tip over and can be wheeled into place....,Yes good ,and l can see it now Golf buggy ,Bike and Chair piece is called Things l have taken up and stopped befor l got started

OK have been working ,Story so far is the tree and root is growing from the hands ,now out of the tree comes other pair of hands ,like a flower bud opening for a new plate to grow.
    .
Most of of the work was done with a Triton rotary tool ,love it, you can get geat detail and play with the shapes with a rotary tool ,it feels like painting some of the time
    .
In the 4th photo there is a blank spot in the branches ,here l am going to try something trickyyyy(quick edit ,didn,t work)
    .
Starting a new job monday so may find it harder to get back in the shed ,unless l can teach carving yes good job it is
    .
don't forget to post in the gallery

    Hi Spirit

Sanding, love sanding, and as I'm sanding I sway in thinking that while sanding a piece of wood smooth reveals its beautiful characteristics, no doubt, but what your really doing is trying to return the wood to its original state, that is, on the in side. For some reason I like weathered wood better than even the smoothest and polished wood. Some carvers don't sand at all, a stand I admire for its honesty let alone skill.

That being said, I can see why the sanding is necessary for your hands carving, it certainly is a complex form with lots of nooks and crannys. I'd like to know where the idea came from, or wether your similar to me in that sometimes something comes from no particular intention, it just leads you there.

I'd like to see your carving with the forearms being the vase and the hands surounded by a bunch of all sorts of flowers, the smaller hands holding a smaller bunch. I'd also paint a blue sky with white clouds as skin but I'll shut up now, take me with a grain of salt Spirit.

Please keep the pics coming Spirit

    Kind regards
    Harry
