I like the S-curve of the wing and the torso.
Is the piece for an exhibition?
It looks exceptional.Scally

Excellent development, U. You have been able to give a meaning to the anatomy essay, now it's the human caught between the angel and the machine. I am very impressed- and envious!

thanks for the comments folks,
the winged, flayed, machined, figure is a recurring theme,
( reading too much sc-fi I suspect)
Scally, the S-curve (contraposto) is designed to give the piece a single
strong sculptural line, it means I can get really busy with the metal parts and still maintain a simple form, thanks for noticing,
also ,the piece is for an exhibition, Ive been invited to exhibit in the
Florence biennale in december
Frank, the piece has developed from previous works, I tend to rework
pieces that I think had merit but didn't get quite right.
without gettin too "art speak" this piece refers to the nature of " addiction"
does anyone get that??
cheers underfoot

I admit it, I did not get the addiction angle . Maybe the image of it as the one-winged Sephiroth of Final Fantasy VII was too strong and I could not see beyond that. Congratulations and best wishes for the biennale, looking forward to see your pictures of the exhibition!

Bloody hell... says he as he tosses every and any thought of ever doing any carving out the window in dispair
All three peices shown are bloody BRILLIANT!!... loved the WIP Spirit had a couple of ideas when I was reading through which I wanted to post but needed to finish the thread and when I did you had finished so doing was was rather invalid eh?... and the nude lady she was downright perfection.
and underfoot? the weird one with the wing? man thats something else!!
Mikhail... stunning!!
To all of you
As I toss my carver stuff in the bin
Thinking to meself... Just walk away Shane leave it to the experts walk away mate...
but I cant resist but stand and cheer yelling...
ENCORE!!!
ENCORE!!!
ENCORE!!!
The ideas that were floating with the hands? no worries I'll tell you... first the fingers were to straight that was the problem you kept seeing but didnt or couldnt change... they should have been curved more as though reaching and holding about to hold together?... just a slight gentle curve to the fingers as though they were curling?...
okay back to the thoughts... I was seeing a tree held in the hands with the nude faiery looking around the trunk... with the lower tree branches swirled around to create the wings as I think you were thinking while the upper branches could be the canopy under which the fairey stands...
thus you would have achieved the hands gently holding... showing the movement and strength yet gentleness of the hands you achieved but would have achieved even better by a simple gentle curvature of the fingers... also showing the strength of nature in the tree and its canopy and roots... held within the hands (of god? Odin perhaps... well Im into Viking stuff so Odin it is ) while the faery that pixie like female creature of the woods has her wings made from the younger therefore smaller and more limber lower branches... achieving movement or the suggestion of movement by her stance of peering around the tree trunk side on would have enabled the faerys body to have movement as well by way of twisting to see and yet hide behind the tree...
the wings and tree combining to make her one with nature which of course is the nature of faerys and trees held up in the hands of freya the goddess of nature?
Well that was what I was gonna suggest but youve damned well finished it now so its of no use is it... always the damned best man never the groom I am
ANYWAY!!! to cut a long story short
WELL DONE!!!Believe me there IS life beyond marriage!!! Relax breathe and smile learn to laugh again from the heart so it reaches the eyes!!

Congratulations
Underfoot, Florence eh.
Congratulations.
I can get a couple of weeks leave in December and would be happy to carry your addiction around.
I am sure you will get a good reception at the exhibition. Your carvings always have an interesting twist and and a fluid quality.
I used to have a WRX.......was than an addiction?
Then I thought....
It is our athletes trying to achieve superhuman feats and resorting to chemicals for assistance. They become addicted to enhancing their performance.Scally

Thanks Dingo
we must be drinking the same red wine, had the same idea for a long time but saddly could not pull it of in the carveing "not good enough carver yet
Frank was saying the same thing with the branches but its like doing high jump you can see how to do it but not the skill to get over the pole
hope its just more practice that l need
l give myself 5 out of 10 for this carveing stuffed the fingers up a bit too skiny in some places and one hand had a little slip up but over all l learned a few things
Time to clean up the shed ,biuld a trophy cabinet with my son over the school holies, then back to work on the chess pieces ,and then l should have time to start a new carveinggoing to have a go at a nude torso, may turn me off women the way l carve.
see you all on my next WIPsmile and the world will smile with you

Art... couldnt you try again? I kinda like the thought of encouraging you to keep going at this one... try three different peices of timber? the tree separate to the faery? that way you could make them interlocking perhaps?
Excellent work mate... and we are our own worst critic you do realize that dont you? We can see every tiny mistake and wrong turning... but you know what? no one else does!Believe me there IS life beyond marriage!!! l did try 3 types of timber ,you see l made the nude a bit big and l found it hard to get the branches around her and still fit in the hands
realy l should have made a new girl but l had so much going on and the fingers closed in at the top made it harder to get it in
funny you say that dingo, l took the hands in to work to show off a bit and somebody was holding it up "going wow its good blar blar"and all l wonted to do is snatch it of them thats when l knew it wasn't finshed yet and it went back to the shed for a few months all the bad parts stood out like dog balls to me
as for keep going ,no its done ,dusted ,closed
please tell me your ideas on the next one im thinking of a chick with long hair ,
how come undy always cuts their head and arms off anyway
maybe sitting on a chairsmile and the world will smile with you

They tend to get all airs an graces and say "oooh thats along thelines of the great carvers and statue creaters of time" and such but in reality its cause they didnt want to stuff up that perfek body!
Think about the female body... its a form of flowing lines no hard places no straight places flowing lines... then look at the hands and feet... hard places all over the place... with the hands you can make them smooth you can give them graceful curves by placement of the fingers and palms but mostly hands are hard and angular by comparison... feet are the same... but the body the torso? smooth flowing lines... not easy to get right but a damned sight easier than adding feet and hands to it and still maintain proportion and smoothness of the flowing lines... not saying it cant be done but rather that its harder thats all.
Now add a face and head neck to that... and you see where Im going? so much to contend with!!! especially proportion expression and bone structure etc... mix becomes too hard for most and ala why the torso is often left just a torso
Sitting is such a still state... whereas leaning turning kneeling even gives power to muscle groups and emotion to features and brings the piece to life... its why many do ballet dancers movement and grace... still sitting can look good dont get me wrong but standing moving or turning adds demension tension emotion and movement and so why some go for ballet dancers and such.... what of the reclining nude you ask... well the reclining nude has movement by way of placement of the arms hands legs and head along with hair and muscle... Im trying to think how you could get the same feelings expressed by a sitting nude and would love to see it done... okay memory kicked in "the thinker" comes to mind... but think on that statue for a moment his feet are lifted up hes resting his elbow on his knee and pondering... expression and movement tension and emotion... yes I see now you can do it!!
Id love to see you go back to the nude peering from around the tree on a larger scale... without the hands say... man I really should try to get into this caper... although Im better at talking about it visualizing it and I suppose criticing it... I get way too frustrated with carving and for that matter painting so I think I will do as I did with the painting and leave it to those with a) the patience b) the calmness of spirit and c) the ability!!
Okay waiting now...
Come on what are you waiting for????
"Get a move on!! chop chop" as me ol mum used to say "come on bugalugs only so many hours in a day you know"
Cheers
