carving . WIP
started to carve today had carvers block for a while now got a bit of mojo back
1st pic is a lump of cedar cut from my farthers place first l cut some holding lugs onto the ends this is so you can hold it in the vice you cut them off when all the big work is done
next l cut some deep grooves to get rough idea what it going to look like ,l don't use plans
swmbo dosn't like me useing the chainsaw when nobody is around so l am giving a resiputating saw a go 'not as good as the chainsaw but a lot safer 'then into it with the arbotec disc carver on a 125 mm grinder as a carving tool it is a pearler "if any one what to get into larger types of carvings its a must just remember anything with teeth that chews though wood can bite into skin .l am working from the pinky to the thumb
useing rotary tool .can l just say that l am not a rich man so l use cheep tools no dremal just a ozito and l have given it a caneing and has not missed a beat l do use dremel cutting bits here l can feel the diffrents between cheep and good
the pic of my hand is what it going to look like and when finish it will be holding another carving..

update of the project and some more carver tips
tip 1 you need a radio something with some old rock playing
talk back radio get you thinking about other stuff and you might change the plan again .
tip 2 you need a air compressor so you can see what you have done maybe a vac would be better must try that next time out in the shed
tip 3 if you are getting into carving for the first time and cant spend a lot on tools just use what laying around one of my first jobs l did it with a screwdrive and a hammer just getting into it is the main thing
tip 4 dont use power tools late at night everybody gets shiitty with you
this pic l have carved more shape into the fingers and started on the thumb and on the back of the hand the nuckels are starting to take shape as well
thanks for checking in on the handsmile and the world will smile with you

looking good. You have a pretty awesome talent and a serious eye for form. Even though they aren't finished, they look so real it is freaky.
I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.

thanks martrix and hardenfast
l have had a good run with this carving swmbo has been good with shed time spent about 12hrs so far
up to the hard part now got to make a decision on what will be comming out of the hands a tree was my first idea made a steel tree to what it looks like 2nd idea was a bird or butterfly
this is the part of the sculpture that will give it the feelings and to set the story
a lot of my work of late has had a dark edge to them a bit anti-religion
so swmbo told me to lighten up a bit
ideas are like a flowing tap sometimes its sad l have a mind like a siv
thank for your posts it helps to keep this wip thread going
l will need some tips with finishes l have n.i.dsmile and the world will smile with you
