    Default Celery Top pine

At the recent Brisbane Working with Wood show I purchased a block of Celery Top Pine from Tassie 1500x400x400mm. I have lopped it into 500mm lengths and sealed the ends with penetrol paint oil. It is extremely wet with sap so it is going to take quite some time to dry. Since all my carvings are generally done using green timber this does not really concern me but I was just curious has anyone had experience with this timber? It appears to carve well so far. I have started a full size bust of an old Aboriginal Elder from one 500mm piece and am impressed with the carving quality of the timber. The sap almost drips out of the timber but I continually oil the worked areas with penetrol to slow down the moisture loss.

It looks like you will be busy for a while.

I made a TV cabinet out of dry boards and shaped a seat on a cajon.

I joined and shaped a thin 3-6mm drumming face to another cajon.

It was good to work with, cutting and carving cleanly.

I finished them with oil and they have a very fine finish.

Since it is recommended for boat building I would expect it to be quite stable.

    Enjoy those big blocks.

Default Thats some fine work Scally

The cabinet is a fine piece of workmanship Scally. I only hope I can do justice to the task I have set myself. I am finding beautiful blue coloration in the grain in some areas. It will possibly disappear as the moisture dries out.
