Cherry Blossom Lovespoon Finished
This Cherry Blossom Lovespoon has now been completed and awaits the return of my daughter, Jessica and her husband Brad from their honeymoon. This spoon was carved from a single piece of english cherry (a single piece of timber is the tradition with lovespoons) and finished with danish oil and wax.
The spoon is about 380 mm long, 125 mm wide and 22 mm deep. It is panel like in form but heavily pierced and multi-layered. There is a swivel at the top of the panel which encloses a heart-shaped area with under-cut initials of the couple on the front and an inlaid contrasting timber heart on the back awaiting a suitable inscription.
The sides of the panel continue down enclosing some celtic knot-work and join with the cherry blossom branches that form a wide flat cage with a carved loose heart inside.

Thank you for the kind comments everyone. It would be great to see some more lovespoons carved.
David Western has an article in 'Wood carving Illustrated' magazine, issue 60 (currently in Australian newsagents). They don't require a large piece of timber and they can be carved 'kitchen table' fashion in an arm-chair while listening to the TV. Excuse the mixed metaphor.

Thanks Iggy, yes very carefully is the way. I used whatever means I could to reach various parts; rolled and folded abrasive paper, abrasive paper attached with double-side tape to bent paddle pop sticks, foam-backed double-sided tape and abrasive paper, attached to bent 'junior hacksaw' blade and narrow strips of abrasive looped around the end of narrow sticks.
The foam backed double sided tape gives a little and conforms to the shape of the work. The only trick is when the task seems like sheer madness, have a go anyway. The first half hour is the hardest and sometimes getting a section to where you want it, is an hour well spent. Then more things seem possible, just put whatever stubbornness you have to good use. Patience has little to do with it just a violent pig-headedness carefully and gently applied.
Time taken? I'm the boss now so it's however long I will admit to myself. I try not to Know. About a season of whatever show was on TV, I wasn't really watching.
