    Default Chess set

Looking at chess pieces carved by a much better carver made me feel nostalgic about my first carving. I started this hobby when in high school, with a Stanley knife (with the result that since then I can not fully extend my left middle finger - it reduces my range of expression in an Anglo-Saxon setting ) and a Japanese linoleum cutting set worth a few cents.
The theme is 15th century Guelph v. Ghibelline. The rooks' merlons, the armour and the dress should be pretty much right. It will soon be an antique in its own right...

    Timber?
    Size?
    Finish?
How did you make the black one black?

Top job, it is good to see more carving on this BB.

No bloody compliment, Arty, I have no artistic education but "I know what I like"...

The timber is a variety of pine (Pinus Cembra) that grows in the central European Alps. It was loved by pattern makers because it can be cut well in any direction and has 'live' knots. Does not take a very good finish, though.

    Size: K 110, Q 100, B 85, N and R 70 high, base 50x45. Pawns 60x35x25.
I had all the blanks cut for me, no spares so I had no margin of error. That's why I had to keep the good with the bad .

The board is African Obece and a dark veneer that I forgot, laid in alternate grain pattern on chipboard.

Can't be precise about the finish (it's more than 40 @#$%^ years!) but I remember that the black was just a wood dye. I started with the idea of obtaining a dark walnut colour but the timber absorbed too much in certain areas, so I ended up soaking the lot to get an even "ebony-ish" finish. All coated with some sort of poliurethane gloss, I think.
    Here is the lot.

... and a Japanese linoleum cutting set worth a few cents. I think they were still selling them recently for a dollar or two.

I've started building a TARDIS several times over the years, but every time I turned around they'd disappear. Worse then $%&# workshop pencils, they are!

Still, 9 or 19... they'd still look good on my chessboard.
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.
