If you are doing a training course, ask the instructor, or read several books on chip carving (local library/inter library loan) - each will have their own ideas on what you need to do their style of carving.

Lee Valley have a HUGE range of chip and 'conventional' carving knives & chisels in their on-line catalog, and buying from them could save you money by avoiding double handling on shipping as well as sales tax etc.

The difference between Flexcut and Pfiel is mainly tactile, personally, I don't like the way flexcut feels in the hand, nor the flex in the blades. Pfiel's on the other hand, even though even their palm tools appear tiny and my large hands dwarf them, they fit me like a glove, very well engineered I think. Flexcuts leave me trying to figure out how to hold them. Both are top quality though.

Personally, I would only buy 2-3 knives to start with, just a few of the basic knives, stab, the curved one whatever that's called, etc, sorry, I've never gotten into chip carving, only 3D carving. When you're first starting out, a full range of tools does you no good, you're not experienced enough to use them all. Start with a couple to few, and expand as you and your skills grow.
    Wood. Such a wonderful substance.

I prefer either the knives from Dennis Moor at chippingaway, or Wayne Bartons knives. just my opinion
