    Default Christmas experiments

Here is a small experiment of "ebonisation"(with nails+vinegar), as a present for christmas.
It's a soap dish which fit on the shower wall bar.

His little brother made of beech...
without the oak's tannin, the black color turn out into a blue-grey that the picture cannot perfectly render.

I don't think it matters: they are both very elegant designs.
Thank you for showing the result with that type of finish.

What type of finish have you sealed the wood?

    had issues for sealing :
undercoat is a PU "outside" varnish. I didn't use it for the two last coats because it's quite ugly
Two last coats are made with kitche & bathroom "aquastop" varnish, which i could'nt use for the 1st coat 'cause it had a chemical reaction with iron acetate.
Hope it will be strong enough !

Nice tip is you can clean up the acetate color with oxalic acid.
I had to do so on some parts of the edge where the wood pumped up my "soup", even whith a varnish coat to prevent.

Don't buy me a chemistry set for christmas !

That is a lovely idea C. I haven't seen anything like that before. I hope that the finish is a sucess, it should be.

I prefer the smaller beech, both for the colour and shape. But they are both lovely and very unusual.
My ambition is to grow old disgracefully. So far my ywife recons that I'm doing quite well! John.
