Another coral sculpture.
Hi Folks, Decided to do another coral themed sculpture, I used 7 different woods in this one, mostly off cuts for the coral flora. I normally steer clear of painting woods but I felt the coral flora has to be bright so a bit of painting was done. The main base is Fig, the top coral section is Poplar and the flora consists of Huon pine, camphor laurel, Jelutong, white beech and western red cedar. The shell is an abalone shell and the candle a battery T light. The picture was taken at night with some soft lighting and the candle on. Hope you like it

Your coral makes it submarine. Then, I'm looking for all the other things that I'd expect to find.
The northern Pacific Octopus up here in the Washington/BC coast is about as big as they get. They tend to "decorate"
the entrance to their cave/grotto with all sorts of trinkets.
Your carving looks almost familiar!!! Thanks.

Interesting fact there RV, maybe they decorate their cave/ grotto to attract prey? My son has some diving footage of an octopus he came across and you could hardly see it until it moved spots and changed color to blend in with surroundings again, amazing creatures.

The Pac. octopus is an intelligent creature, smart enough to understand how to open a screw top jar.
Maybe they take a liking to certain objects for "home decor"?
Record is 9.1m across and 272kg. Average is 5m across and 50kg.
Your carving has a lot to look at, maybe a story behind some things as well. Always like that.

Thank you Germaine, The fig was ok to carve, a bit brittle maybe and I don't think I would use it for anything to detailed but maybe an abstract carving or something would suit best. One thing I did like about it, it was very easy to sand and finish. Hope your keeping well.
RV, I got my inspiration to try these coral carvings after looking at Mark Doolittle's work, his work is amazing and mine looks very very average in comparison, in fact there is no comparison, his is streets ahead have a look at website and you'll see what I mean. Rob, I guess you have also viewed the work of Arthur 'Nobby' Clark famed for his 'Denizens of the deep'.
Here is a link to his website-
