    Default a day's work

A builder mate asked me two days ago if I could knock up some carvings for vertical midsections of seven gables he was doing in a house construction. He has to put them in Thursday and i only had today free - so off I went. The basic idea were ten bats hanging in the five middle gables (two per side of each three by two)
and something floral at the two ends. He was happy and didn't mind the rough sort of result. I used the arbortech minigrinder mostly for this 'fast order'. Its kiln dried gum. I hardly had time to snap these inferior shots before they were whisked away. Such jobs are good lessons in efficiency and forgetting the fuss.

Nice bit of stylizing in the bats, I reckon you should take that idea a bit further, nice job

I was thinking about it today. Bats are best. I had to come back to see what I did yesterday, as it was all such a tornado of activity and I did them straight of the bat (: .... no sketching or marking out. There is something very energizing about doing things that way - you hardly have an image as you are doing it, and so it is very surprising to see something there at the finish, as if done by another.

Yep a bit like catching a glimpse, catching the shape in one go without planning, can be exhilarating or disastrous

    Thumbs up

Like the idea and wht's been done so far.

Agree with Iggy, a bit of furthering and refinement will do no harm.

Unfortunately they will be strung up three metres in mid air tomorrow. Unless I chuck a sickie with my day job its game over. They will look better if oiled.

No problem, Movay, you can abseil from the crossbeam to finish them...
Personally, I would have preferred a more marked separation of the bat from the beam but they still look good.

I agree. I couldn't compromise the timber too much because of a tie-rod going through a hole just above them.

The builder brought back the two ends of the run of gables saying he wouldn't be putting them up for a while and I could do more work on them. So it was good to give some real finish, though I gave up after a while with the stringy and flaky gum tree wood.

Reckon they're gonna look great when they're up. Any chance of some photos when they are in position?

Thanks. I don't know what type of possum it is yet though.

I like more the frog. What type of frog is it, then?
