Australian woods for Follansbee style carving?
Hi all, I haven't really tried carving before so would like some advice on timbers that might be suitable for a project. I am making a couple of sewing boxes for my daughters and would like to decorate the front panels with some carving styled like the 17th Century reproductions by Peter Follansbee. He mostly uses white oak, freshly felled and split or sawn, for example:

I'm wondering about Qld Maple because we have a sideboard that has some carving a bit like this style, but wonder is there any local timber that's going to be good for a beginner carver to work with?
Any suggestions gratefully received.
thanks, Peter

Hi pjr, if this is your first carving project I would suggest using the best possible wood available..
(I've seen so many first time carvers discouraged by attempting on crappy wood)
my top two suggestions would be.. white beech or huon pine.
I've found that Qld maple is nice but can vary a lot in carvability, choose carefully, some may be too open grain for the detail you're after.
what if the hokey pokey is really what it's all about?

The Peter Follansbee style box looks very daunting for a first time caver.
Beautiful though .I've just become an optimist . Iv'e made a 25 year plan -oopps I've had a few birthdays - better make that a 20 year plan
