A few fish
Had a bit of spare time lately and managed to knock out a few moe fish. There is a red cedar jewfish, blackwood tuna, and camphor barramndi, kingfish and spanish mackeral. Any feedback is welcome.

Welcome to the forums fisherman. Those are nice looking carvings and very true to shape also. Well done. What sort of carving technique do you use? ie: power tool like arbotec etc, or chisel, or whatever.
How big are the fish? No need to lie.
Sydney is a big place, whereabouts are you?

Thanks Prozac. I use to carve them entirely by hand, using spokeshaves, drawknifes, gouges and chisels. I became soft recently and brought a arbotech mini grinder and power chisel. I use these to rough out the shape then add the detail using pfeil chisels. Then clean them up with a spokeshave and sand to the cows come home.
I very the length depending on the type of fish, the fish in the photos are between 900 and 1200 long.
I too live in gods country on the northern beaches.

The first time l have had a good look at camphor they say it carves well but the colour turns me off a bit
all well carved did you carve both sides or just the side that showssmile and the world will smile with you

Just to show we're all different I really like the way the camphor grain works into the shape of the fish, particularly the Kingfish. Are they single pieces of timber or have you made joins eg the side fins.
I'm a sucker for fancy grain

Thank Spriit it was a beautiful piece of red cedar, i'm currently making a snapper out of the same piece. I only carve one side as they hang on the wall, may do both sides in the future, although it will depend on the availability and expense 90mm thick timber.
The camphor carves very well (smells nice too) and i think it looks ok in small works, but i don't like the look of it in large slab style furniture, i suppose its personal taste.

Great looking fish Fisherman, are the fish inspired from some of your memoirs or just wishful thinking? I can appreciate how much sanding involved, you must be very patient. Thanks for the show, ever thought of doing a school of small bait fish for the bigger ones to chase?

They look great Fisherman.
I like the way you have used the grain to complement each fish....
Long straight lines for the sleek Spanish mackeral.....wide flat sawn growth rings for the rounder body of the jewfish.
Once upon a time I caught a good jewfish and had a fibreglass copy made.
It is flat to the wall but the head and shoulders come away from the wall.
I think it adds a bit more life to the fish.
You might want to try one as it is only the head that is fully carved.
Barramundi fishing.....that is a lot of fun.Scally
