What elegant designs for elegant purposes. A+ in the technical relief carving technique, too.
I'd like to see the inside. Big money as retirement gifts. $100+?????

I'll bet that they don't sink to the bottom of the lake like mine did (metal.)
Then again, on a river, I suppose you could watch them for 20(?) minutes?

Not a fly-fisher myself... prefer a spear, but I can appreciate quality when I see it! Your relief carving is exquisite.

    They look very nice.

Did you work from a plan, or make it up as you went along?

they are 7"x4.5"x1.5", hand drawn on the timber from photos and then chip carved with flexcut palm tools.

    some of them.
that's the other passion (now taking a backseat passenger seat).

    answering an earlier question above:
they cost between $250-400US depending on materials. I imagine I've sold a dozen (some donated to causes, like the mayfly) but all have been sold to fly fishing North Americans.

I've zero intention of selling any here, to be clear.

besides, they're more ornamental due to their size over their practicality. it wouldn't take a lot to remove some of the exposed carving by carrying it with a bunch of other gear.
and you wouldn't want to see yours floating downstream, especially with a booty like the one above.

    cheers,
    shawn

I cannot believe the size of this message board... I'll be lost for days.

Ho ho! My apologies for underestimating their valuation. Yet, I can fully understand why the buyers are there.
I hope that you need to beat them off with a stick!

Some carvers with REALLY INTENSE brand loyalties poo-poo Flexcut tools. Wrong.

    Default I lied...

    but seriously... this is it.

it has been started... 'four corners fulfils the circle'

but I have a couple questions:

what timber could I use for the display encasement that compliments bh sassafras (beside bh sassafras)?

the intention is for the future owner to either display them on the wall or on his desk. when it's on the desk you can lift the lids displaying the flies and have a panoramic view of the salmon run. the boxes will have a natural polyurethane finish (typ).
I also haven't decided on whether I'll machine or carve the display case edges... I like the idea of carving perhaps flies or feathers or hooks or everything... but it may get all too busy.
I suppose I could do both; carve into the router finish. suggestions?

    cheers,
    shawn

Very nice work, there would be a good market for those boxes.

From me, after 50 years of flyfishing, don't let the boxes get to busy.
I'd like to admire the salmon run with no distractions. Stand, waist deep, in a sockeye run, yuou'll get the idea.

For example: were I to see one or more tied fly carvings, it means that somebody else got there first,
got ahead of me to the run.

Same as for large & dramatic landscape pictures = very hard to fantasize about being there when the viewer
sees a canoe of campfire smoke, etc.

    finished carvings...

decided on a bh sass base as well and thinking of sparsely carving some simple branches and leaves around the framing; a border of 40mm.
still up the air about it but I've loads of time to have a think as I tie four salmon flies... and wait for the base timber to arrive from tassie.

    cheers,
    shawn
