    Default Freshwater Drum

This project took me longer than expected as I had a change of direction as to how to percent it. I decided to make it a wall mount rather than a shelf mount due its size which is 21” x 12” x 6”. Freshwater Drum, not thought of as very eatable these days, was sought after as a good table food during the Great Depression era. Folks would seine their stock ponds for crawfish which was the preferred bait, put them in a wet burlap bag, and go fishing at the closest river or stream. As a child I even went on a few of these adventures which usually lasted a couple of days.Wall Mount.jpg

Thanks much for the comments and likes. The fish, except for the eyes are carved and shaped in one piece using a Dremel and files. I applied some pyrography for the fish scales. I decided to airbrush some color on the driftwood and added a bit of moss for effect. The moss which is real was soaked in a watery wood glue and acrylic paint mix. The eyes were made by drilling out the head, inserting a dowel rod which is then painted to appear as eyes.

There is another story associated with this carving. I have a very good friend named Glen who back in the 80’s moved in to my town of Lake Dallas, Texas from the tiny town “Wink, Texas. Wink is located in far West Texas which is much like the very arid parts of Australia. One must drive three hours from Wink to go wet a hook. Well, Lake Dallas just happens to be situated right on a large lake, and ole Glen loved to fish it. Glen was so happy that he bought himself a new boat just to fish the lake. Glen’s life was good.
Moving on some ten years later things changed for ole Glen. Glen and his wife split up. Glen’s wife finds greener pastures and Glen is forced to return back to Wink, Texas where there is no water to float his boat. Ole Glen still fishes, but must travel a good distance to the Rio Grande, River that separates Texas from Mexico. So happens that the Mexican drug cartels like to hang around that river as well.
I shipped out the Freshwater Drum carving last week and it is mounted on ole Glen’s wall right now.
