    Default Gargoyles, etc.

Recently stayed with a friend in New Mexico, who among other things, is a brilliant carver. Thought you might be interested in some of his work. The gargoyles actually work as roof drains.

    Very unique and cool!!
    Thanks for sharing.....

I'm not positive (just remember hearing it somewhere years ago) but I THINK gargoyles can only be called gargoyles if they do indeed work as water removal. Otherwise they are considered statues..... I could also be talking utter crap and have to blame my bad memory again.....

Correct: "Gargoyle: a projecting waterspout projecting from a roof or the parapet of a wall or tower, usually carved into a grotesque human or animal figure". Glossary of Building Terms.

Yep, if they work as water spouts from the roof they are gargoyles. If purely decorative or structural, they are called grotesques.
