    Default goat on the rocks

    Hi,

Going into animal carving these days.
Here is a goat I made from a piece of green birch I had left from the greenman.
I wont avoid little cracks this time...
It was fun to shape ears and horns, but there were some tricky places to go too.
I'm thinking about investing into bent gouges.
I will let it dry before finishing too.

    Thumbs up

Very expressive young goat there, love it!!!

Goats are among my favourite animals. They are very intelligent,
faithful and tough. They have a sense of humour too, and that
    shows in your carving.

I take my hat off to you Copeau, as I have found out animal carving is very difficult especially when they have skinny legs and little horns etc. You have done a wonderful job as usual, I hope one day my skills will improve to such a level.

That is really lovely. When I first met my wife I moved in with her in a little cottage in the country on her parants farm, and they had a decent herd of goats. It didn't take long and I was smitten by them, they're cheeky and smart, this carving reminds me of them.

yes, my parent's farm is quite small, about 40 goats, every animal is known by his name. And if they are always ready to do stupid things like eating your flowers and veg, they're really friendly, rubbing their head on your legs.

Nice work, Copeau. There is a guy in our woodcarving club that only carves goats. Big and small. Travels the country. And does what he loves. Andy

I would be glad to see one or two picts of his goats if he agrees. I had never thought how complex was a goat anatomy before carving it !

Hi Copeau. My friend is a bit more of a production carver. Chainsaw, power and hand carving. He's in Texas now, but I'm sure he will share with you. Andy

The rocks & the body are very good.

The proportions of the neck/head/horns/ears/mouth are all slightly over or under sized.

I can stand back & tell you that but I can also tell you that I couldn't have done a better job than you did.

If you find a post of mine that is missing a pic that you'd like to see, let me know & I'll see if I can find a copy.

yeah, I thought the neck, head and ears were a bit oversized.
What do you mean about mouth and horns ? too big or too small ?

I started from a single drawing (profile) and cut the piece of wood a bit too thick, being afraid of not having enough. I think it didn't help to set all the proportions right, though it's also because of my skill level !

Horns seem a bit small for the rest of the head but they may be OK with the size of the body.

The mouth seems to be open too far.
