    Default Gotcha

Here's my latest addition to the "through the wall" concept, bit of cat & mouse. Done in Jelutong, I used my knives a
fair bit on this one rather than chisels, much needed practice. Hope you like it.

Ha! I guessed you were either on or off the wall again. Good.
Another captured moment in time, which is most appealing to me.

Yes I like it, I don't know if it's just the sensibillities of a British public but years ago a did a stoat with a dead limp mouse in its' mouth - great I thought that looks noble - at a trade craft fair the buyers ALL told me "oh no that'll never do, it'll put people right off !"
To me it really is just a part of nature. Often since that time I've seen marvellous eagles with their prey & foxes carrying dead rabbits etc but I did not dare do them for fear of alienating the buying public. Even though I completely disagree with his unrealistic outlook on the natural world , this attitude is I think pretty widely held. Well they are going to miss out on some powerful sculpture I reckon !

I think it's a case of exposure and sensibilities that divides country folks from the city people.
Lots of city people can't think beyond the front case in the butcher shop. Country people may be looking for a "good mouser" to rent.

We get city folks who insist on riding their bicycles on the back logging roads. They have absolutely no concept of the fact that a grizzly bear can run down a galloping horse.

Rob develops some impressive concepts in his "Wall" series.
It's a delight to see each idea come to form.

Hi Mike & RV. Mike I totally under understand were your coming from, it just nature, some people hate cat's and blame them for putting small
marsupials into extinction but it's law of the land. When a small cat catches a mouse it's eeehhh that's horrible, when a lion downs a large prey
they think it's awesome, maybe I should have carved a lion . RV, your right, city people don't want to know how the meat made it to the butchers window but country people do the whole process themself. Anyway, that's my rant for the day. I still have a few more ideas in the wall series & I'll keep you guessing

I am of the mind that feral mammalian cats should be exterminated in Australia to protect the marsupials which never have had the reproductive success of a mammal. That is a fact. The mammals have no more valid position in Australia in my mind that a fox, a pig, a rabbit or a cane toad.
Had I gone back to OZ, I would be on an eternal shooting spree. Just house cleaning, sez I.
Blast them all. Can you imagine having a Thylacine to keep your house clean?

The "wall" series. Has any gallery seen what you're doing? Two or three more and you are up for a show that could tour Melb & Syd.

No RV, nobody but this forum, Facebook friends and friends/ family that visit are the only ones who see my carvings, I don't think my finish is gallery
worthy, the concept is quite novel and fun to do but I can't imagine exhibiting my work. I don't think galleries want to know you unless you have
    an art degree do they??.

I would say that galleries are hardly interested in finish ! ( not that I can see anything wrong with your finish)
It is novelty that is their main concern. As I've mentioned before I think this is in fact right up their street.
May be wise though to explore the idea thoroughly & have a good few pieces ready before approaching them.

Rob, you're developing a body of work which explores a concept which isn't hard to grasp.
The diversity of expressions is intriguing.

In Tangermans old book " 1001 whittling patterns" there's a carving on a similar theme, cleverly called " just passing thru' " The figure is on two sides of the same wall.
Whilst it isn't half as well thought though as your designs , maybe too complex or not obvious enough , I do' know ? I thought it might be of interest.

Mike, Thanks, I like that, The way they have done the knee could come in very handy for the next one I'm thinking about.
