For my little dragon head (https://www.woodworkforums.com/f10/little-dragon-head-188192), I used a nail.
I just ginded it to a polygonal shape and blunt it with sandpaper to remove any sharp edge.
Give a try on a scrap first !

Thanks for your input.
the wood is lime so it should be pretty straight forward.
Some people say drop it in boiling water, some steam it. some say a steamiron works .Ian norbury used a paint brush with boiling water.
Its a case of trial and error i think

I've used that technique just with a blunt punch, sanding the rest of the surface down to the level of the depression and then applying a drop of water to the compressed spot with a brush and it worked like magic. (Now where the hell is that little huon pine frog?)

Finished the ukibori ,think i should have used different size bolts to make indents in the wood there to unifrom.
still some tidying up to do .have fixed the eyes in the just a case of varnishing and mounting it on the hazel hiking pole shank
