improvised hair pin WIP
Almost improvised, a thought in mind but it was tricky to draw anyway.
I cut 10cm of a boxwood branch and after roughtinng out the shape, I start the carving with a v tool and a 8/8-10mm gouge. The extra wood at the bottom is used to screw a scrap and clamp it to the bench.

I see a spiral like a snail's shell.
My imagination is too weak to see the "hair pin."
In time, you will reveal all.

Haha, I tried to make a snail shell, with a crocodile coming outa the shell, few month ago. But It was a total mess !
Let's reveal the 'hair pin', I hope the word is correct ?
When I can't go any further on the top, I cut the waste underside and just let a bit to clamp it a little longer.
Then I dig until the deepest places are pierced, with the #8. As it's still heavy, I keep digging with a spoon gouge.
A simple spike is added through the holes, 8mm at a side and 6mm at the other.

Wow that is very nice. The texture does give it a life of it's own.

Thanks for that, it's always interesting to see how other people work. I didn't see any drawings in your pics did it just evolve as you carved ?
The result is very sculptural & belongs on a plinth rather than half hidden in somebodies hair !

Elegant 3D thinking.
Thanks for the pictures to illustrate the carving of the void on the underside.

Just to add for those living at the other side of the planet who aren't familiar with boxwood- it is a VERY heavy & hard wood indeed.
A hair pin may seem like a rather trivial project but for me this truly is a worthy piece of sculpture, I'm almost inspired to get some gouges to compliment my knives by this masterful WIP ! Very impressed !

Thank you all !
That's right, Mike. I only had a general idea, not precise enough to manage to draw a correct sketch. I let it evolve as i carved. I'm also used to draw patterns but a bit of spontaneity gives a feeling of freedom !
Right, and what a fantastic wood ! Very fine grain, holds great details, strong enough to carve it thin and in almost any way.
It's been some time i didn't carve some, and what a pleasure it was !
I'm glad if i inspired you, even more if you don't work with gouges as I used a very few tools !

I suppose that leap of faith into the world of improvisation is where creativity breaths and originality lives, no need for pencils and measuring sticks, a scary place for some and such comfort to others. Most lovely, elegant work Copeau. The only box wood I have had the pleasure to use came from a cracked in half old hand saw handle and remember the wood being a delight to carve for it was able to hold the finest detail you'd want, I just cant remember what I made from it, maybe a few small faces that I threaded for a bracelet?

Me thinks very nice. I know one girl in particular that would wear this if she wore hair pins.
TimTim. A man of measurable mess.
