    Default Knives or chisels

    Hi all...Im a newbie to carving but I would like to carve somthing like this. Would I need knives or chisels to do it? thankyou

    CHISELS....If you are going to start with one piece of wood and you want the final to be as large as the original?? don't start with knives or chisels....start with a chainsaw!!

    My mom bought a chainsaw carved bird, not real large. When she was away one weekend I "finished" her carving, using chisels I made it look like a real bird, even overlapping feathers. I found out from one of my siblings that I "ruined" her carving and she had it split and burned it in the fireplace. Haven't heard a word about it....

    That tells a lot more about human nature than woodcarving... but I agree with the intent of the first paragraph. For something like that the adze is more suitable than the scalpel.
