Low, low, low relief portrait
I wanted to try this since I saw a couple of portraits in boxwood like thisat the V&A museum in London a few years ago.
It's my second try, first was a mess !
A 2mm relief only, so little wood to remove, but every small chip makes light or shadow.
Still have some improvement to do on the hair, but it's better than the first.
It was made from a photo, Holly, 7cm ø

This is beautiful Copeau. Having recently taken up trying low relief in wooden broaches, I have a much greater appreciation for this kind of work than I did before. This must have taken some time. Is it ok to ask how long? Also, was wondering how big it is. There is nothing in the photo to give scale.

Wow, that's nice Copeau, I have yet to try relief carving, I've just done in the round, Did you do it all with hand gouges or is there any router or power work there. it looks so precise. My brother wants me to try and relief carve our coat of arms but I'm not game to try yet.

Thanks !
Yeah, I think you made me want to do some relief as i was more going in-the-round last few month.
There was so little wood to remove it didn't take that long ! The waste can easily fit in the palm of my hand. It was done within a day. It's ø is 7cm ( must be something like 2 3/4 inches if i'm right).
I used hand gouges only (though i thought a dremel or so could have been easier in some tricky parts like the corner of the eye or the mouth ).
I used my smallest ones :
6mm, n°4,5,7
3mm,n°11
3mm & 10mm v-tools.
And a little encouragement for your coat of arm ! Nothing ventured, nothing gained !
Maybe a clay model would give you more confidence, and you could try again later if you're not happy with it.

Something I have been meaning to try as well. You make it look so tempting. I'd like to work that scale but my eyes are starting to protest.
Beautiful.
Does Le Tour pass your place this year?

Very nice work. Especially considering the scale, you've done a great job of this.
(Good lighting too.)... Steve
