Mailbox Post
The other kind of mailbox post, that is: real mailbox, real post.
I replaced the architectural trainwreck that came with the house I bought a couple years ago. The blank was PT Southern Pine - 4x4 center with 4 - 2x6's around in a pinwheel pattern. (90mm x 90mm; 38mm x 140mm). Overall dimensions were selected to achieve conformance to USPS and Canada Post/Poste regulations.
Finishing - adapted in process:
Basic stain was 1 Dark Walnut (Minwax 2716), 3 Red Oak (Minwax 215). Applied to backgrounds and edge chamfers. This was diluted 1 Basic to 5 Neutral (Minwax 209) for end grain.
2 coats spar varnish to all.
Then, dissatisfied with contrast, I mixed 8 varnish to 1 Basic. 3 coats to all except faces and end grain. (Less dilute than Minwax telephone recommendation of 10:1, but hardened OK.)
Finally, 1 coat varnish to all. Two coats of Jasco wood preservative (copper naphthenate) on embedded part of post. Embedded in rocks, no concrete. Rocks extended at surface to the shape shown, about 2in thick, with black polyethylene below as grass/weed barrier.
Calendar time was about 6 weeks total, but usually only 0-3 hours per day.

About the "kwame" thing: No African heritage I'm aware of, but I was born on a Saturday; "Kwame" means "born on Saturday."

Thanks, Wendy. The only place I've seen anything like it was the logo for Nth engine video cards. Don't know if they're still around.

That's a long street you live on
Very nice, wish more people would do something like it so it wasn't so hard to find their house

Now if you really want to help people find your house it needs to stand out in the dark - how about lighting the inside so that the numbers show in silhouette? Better than putting glow paint on the edges!!

Thanks, all.
Silent, the street isn't really so long; just shy of 1000m. Most USA & CA cities have centralized numbering. Starts here about 5km south of me. Five digits not unusual. Streets sometimes have several unconnected segments with same name, others change names at intersections. Weird.
Jmk, the contrasting stain seems to work pretty well at night (except for idjits driving without lights).
Yeah, Tassie, a single digit might look a little lonely. It's been safe for about 1.5 yrs; the only halfwit I have to worry about is me backing a trailer into the driveway.

Thanks, Wongo. I considered something like it at my previous house, but
(a) I was renting the house, and wasn't enthusiastic about such an investment, and
(b) Previous house number contained numeral "5" and I still don't like my design of wrap-around "5."
