Non-messy rust preventer
I know the question of rust prevention on hand-tools has been covered many times before, but I'm coming at it from a slightly different angle here.
I want a rust preventative for carving tools which is not messy. I'm particularly concerned about tools which I know I'm going to be putting away and not using for quite some time.
The reason I want it to be non-messy is because my wife has just made me some tool rolls out of canvas, white bleached stuff - perhaps not the best choice. While they are new I don't want oil or something wiping off on them. Illogical, I know, because they will get grubby eventually, but just the way its done around here.
I'm currently using Superglide because I think I read somewhere that it had rust-prevention properties but now I cant find any reference to it on the product literature so I'm not sure.
cheers

Use your choice of a good rust preventative then wrap the steel portion in brown paper then grease proof paper before storing in the tool roll.

Silica gel packets! These are the little packs of granules that come with electronic components, photographic gear, and often other purchases online. Small packets are often included in medication (pill) bottles to keep the items dry. Just throw a couple of these in the bottom of the tool pockets for shorter tools. I live in Louisiana where the weather in the summer is hot and humid (I think today was 93°F and 118% humidity <grin>). My tools are in a wooden box in my un-airconditioned garage and have not a speck of rust on any of them because I keep several of these packets in the box.

Anything I'll be putting away for a while gets a liberal coating of G15, then stored individually in a ziplock plastic bag.....no rust, no mess
