    Default Migration

The Artlanders theme for this year..... I'm looking for ideas.

    mi·gra·tion (m-grshn)n.
    1.
The act or an instance of migrating.
    2. A group migrating together.
    3. Chemistry & Physics a. The movement of one atom or more from one position to another within a molecule.
    b. The movement of ions between electrodes during electrolysis.

    migration [maɪˈgreɪʃən]n
    1. the act or an instance of migrating
    2. a group of people, birds, etc., migrating in a body
    3. (Chemistry) Chem a movement of atoms, ions, or molecules, such as the motion of ions in solution under the influence of electric fieldsmigration (m-grshn)
    1.
The seasonal movement of a complete population of animals from one area to another. Migration is usually a response to changes in temperature, food supply, or the amount of daylight, and is often undertaken for the purpose of breeding. Mammals, insects, fish, and birds all migrate. The precise mechanism of navigation during migration is not fully understood, although for birds it is believed that sharp eyesight, sensibility to the Earth's magnetic field, and the positions of the Sun and other stars may play a role.
    2. The movement of one atom or more, or of a double bond, from one position to another within a molecule.
    3. The movement of ions between electrodes during electrolysis.

    Ahh, thank you. Migration, hmm...

The other week when listening to the ABC they had a segment on Eva Shubert, a migrant and artist who migrated from the Czechoslovakia in 1922, she was a professional woodcarver.

I also find Reg Mombassa deeply inspiring, he migrated from New Zealand:

Just a couple of ideas for you

Can't get over how close it is to "uitlander" which fits in so well with your theme

I was thinking of something along the lines of Undies' wooden birds.

That's some brilliant work there, I haven't been on the forum that long so was unaware these sculptures existed. IF you went along the lines of the chookasaurus then I think you'll be on a winner. The thing with these types of competitions is that you have to try and think outside the mainstream. E.G: Migration = birds, animals and people from other countries. What would be different, what would attract attention and what would people instantly identity with? Great topic though, will give it a little further thought.

Well, for what its worth, the first migration of people was on foot. There are still a lot of this world's population that get around that way exclusively and some of the most epic of stories from any and all eras are about people who found their way on foot against long odds.

With that in mind, how about some walking sticks or staves with these themes? They could be as simple or as complex as the skill of the various carvers. Lots of scope... lots of possibilities.

    Just a thought....

With my biologist's hat on for a moment:

The basic implication is a group, possibly that means 3 or more.
Some critters form life-long pair-bonds such as Ravens and Canada geese.
For the beast you may choose, pairs might be the rule. Do they also travel with their young as a family unit?

Our sea-run, anandromous rainbow trout, called steelhead, ususally move back into fresh water as pairs: catch one and there's another quite nearby.

One aspect of human migration might be the ready accessibility of fire, either carried with them as glowing coals somehow or wooden devices for making fire. Bow-drills come to mind along with tinder boxes, perhaps made of bark. Light weight travelling gear would also include some sorts of containers, drinking vessels, hunting kit, etc.

Hat's off to you: what a fine puzzle!

    Boats...lots of them......
chainsaw cut lots of (square) wood bases....drill and fit a length of rusty 6mm reo rod about 1 mtr long....(about waist height)
then rough cut a whole bunch of wood canoe/boat shapes and fit them to the top of the posts...
position them (on the floor) through the gallery in an 'arty' way..
Well thats the first thing that came to my mind

what if the hokey pokey is really what it's all about?

I have heaps of hoop pine bowl blanks & some have cracked so they don't suit turning but carving into oval shapes would work.

Also have some rusty reo mesh (200mm grid) I could cut that out & bend it into a free standing form with the top edge cut to different lengths like waves on the ocean.

Position a string of boats along the top at different heights & angles.

I could call it 'Fleet Street'

I like that way Richard Raffan does boats, I used to make bananas that way, I might adapt the idea.
