    Default Mini angle grinders??

Didn't want to hijack Tonyz's thread but I just broke the second drive cable on my Foredom today . . . just too much resistance when using a 50mm carbide burr in the angle-grinder handpiece . Seeing this carving caper looks like taking over my shed (life!), I figure a mini angle grinder is my next step but I haven't used or seen the only two options I can find - the Arbortech mini carver or the Proxxon long-neck 50mm grinder. Anyone used either or both that can tell me which might be the best way to go??

    Vern,

I purchased the LHW long neck grinder as the King Arthur Tools "Merlin" kit in 2012 to do the fiddly tidy up work on a traditional rocking horse I made for our first granddaughter. It came with the KA "Merlin" chainsaw disk and several other Sabur like carbide disks and sanding disks.

Overall, it performed well but I'm not sure that I would like to work it hard continuously. It has rarely been used since as I'm more into glue sniffing these days aka Powderpost's influence. It had sufficient power to do what I wanted it to do, however heavy cuts taxed it.

Thanks for the info. The Merlin looks exactly the same as the Proxxon but costs more than double. Robustness was my main concern with the Proxxon - they look more like toys in the pictures but I've never seen one in real life.

    Hi TTIT,

Can’t help you directly but I do use a Proxxon Professional drill/grinder IB(SE) which I believe uses the same motor (100w). I like the Proxxon gear, decent build quality in my opinion. However, the use you’re describing is tougher than mine so I’d definitely recommend you get your hands on one ‘in the flesh’ for a trial.

    Good hunting!

Have you considered a right angle pneumatic die grinder or even one of the small straight shaft pneumatic handpiece type things, similar size to a Foredom handpiece, but with about a metre of very flexible airline instead of a shaft and remote motor.

    or

I used to be an engineer, I'm not an engineer any more, but on the really good days I can remember when I was.

Thanks Malb. I often use my 110 degree die grinder and have actually made an arbor to attach the 50mm carbide disk to it since my first post but it has a few problems that stop me using it exclusively . . .
    1. The NOOIIISSSSEEEEE!!!!
    2. My compressor can't keep up to it so it runs constantly and just adds to the NNNOOOOIIIIISSSSEEEEE!!!!
    3. The die grinder is a lot longer from the disk surface to the top of the tool which limits where it will squeeze into.
    4. Did I mention the NNOOOIIISSSSEEEEEE!!!

I haven't seen the micro version before so I might look into a right-angled version of those rigs.
