Carving holders were far more ancient than that. That was a job for an apprentice, to hold the wood in their teeth.
I was more interested in the links to the film of totem pole carvers. The 'D' - adze that you see used is likely made from a leaf spring strip from a vehicle. I want to make one, under the supervision of a Pacific NW carver. I'm amazed as usual how much they could do with the one tool (they never show you the chainsaw.)
