Thanks cava. While not a "bargain," $465 is a really good price, considering what's in the kit and Pfeil besides.

I began with the 6-8 tools kitted up by the course instructor. 15(?) years later, I still don't use the 12/8 V tool more than 2-3 times a year. It just isn't something that I need to use in the kinds and styles of carvings that I like to do.
My 3 tool rolls are each made from 1.5 legs of a pair of old blue jeans. I cut them out and pin them together, nice lady here in the village sews them up for $5. Just a single row with a flap to cover the tool edges. The very most dangerous part of my carving day is putting the tools away. Can't afford any distractions, fatigue, etc.

The other mistake is that the rolls all look the same. " Uh, duh, which tool is in which roll?" Possibly a line or two of felt marker on the outsides would make them distinctive.

I've never understood how to successfully post links.
Get into the Wood Carving Illustrated website, the Carving Forums.
Scroll all the way down to Wood Carving Tips and Techniques.
Search in there for "Denim Tool Roll."
It comes up as the 5th - 8th listing.

The instructions are there. I have to go back there for the instructions,
every time I want to make a new one!

Next up will be a roll for (hopefully) all 7 of my crooked knives. They are in the range of 30 - 55cm in length.
A couple of years ago, I made a nice wooden box which held 3 of them.
    Well. . . . . . . times change, don't they?

People have given me a couple of pairs of baffed-out jeans so I think I have lots of material.
The shape and the size haven't come to me yet.

    Nice buy.
I'll predict that the carving gouges need to be tuned up at 20 degrees, no more than that.
    What's the sweep and width?
I'd do up the bench chisel at 30 degrees.
    Curious. Why new handles?

DSEL74: thank you very much for posting the link.

Several things happened: I had a commercially-made/store bought tool roll that I bought with
my original kit of 7-8 tools. Very nice, double row. It sits up on a shelf, gathering sawdust.

First, I out-grew it, buying a few more gouges as the next couple of years went by.

Second, that tool roll had wide pockets for large tool handles and narrow pockets for mid-size handles.
Not someting that you might pay attention to in the beginning but it comes up fast enough.
Everything that I bought had a big handle and I ran out of places that they would fit.

I was quite pleased with the first denim roll that I put together, all big pockets.
Learned that the mid-size tools fit into those 2 at a time. That works OK.

Third, my wood carving knife collection grew a little, added to with 2 pairs of Mora #171 hook knives.
So had a roll made to keep all knife-things in. Same big pockets, foam rubber to fill up the bottoms for short tools.

Bought a consignment of tools & wood, so had to get denim tool roll #3 sewn up.

The current state of affairs is that I have 3 denim rolls, all nearly full.
Seven crooked knives that need a home together.
A Kestrel adze (fun build) and a Stubai adze (silly geometry), likewise homeless.

When the cat jumps up on the bench to supervise, I don't want her askew in the skews, either.
I can make leather booties for the two adzes. Not even a foggy concept for the crooked knives.
