Pictures.
Ok, I've been told that if I should post pictures. I'm still working on just about everything I have.. but this is somewhat interesting, I think. It is fine work from here on out... the piece is just about an inch and a half high. It is a cyprus knee from florida that had been cut off many times by a lawnmower.
I've been told it doesn't look like I've done that much work... actually, I've put about a hundred hours in... it is my little baby that I'm taking my time with. I'm in love with it.
Sorry the depth of view is so narrow. I'm short on lenses and/or lighting at the moment.
I used a dremel, mainly. Some hand fashioned tools for rubbing... still trying to figure out the best way to do little areas.
I'm also trying to figure out what to do with the middle... that is taking quite a lot of work/thought.

That is amazing!! I think the talent lies in doing what you've done, working on it, but keeping the natural look to it. WoW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is something nice in the story too. Gets cut off by the lawn mower for ages, then someone comes along and makes art out of it. One happy Cypress knee.

Wow, thanks. I'm very pleased that you seem to be able to see the intent... I mean, as I said the piece isn't done, there is a lot of little fiddly stuff to do, like polish out the toolmarks without ruining what has been established, and deciding how much of my input to make on the center "dirty" bit.... I don't want to break through to the quite light interior, but I do want to brighten it up and reveal some of that beautiful redness. I also am trying to kindof keep a cascading effect... that is why I took the portrait-oriented picture, to show how the inner swirls should correspond with the outer roiling... like a little eddy or something.

If you like the story behind it... while I was back visiting family in Florida, I spent a lot of time with my Uncle, who is just 17 years my senior. We went out shootin' and fishin' and boatin' and generally pretending the world was still like it was when we were kids out on the Island. He loves nature about like I do... He was out working on Doc B's farm, keeping things mowed and snipped, and had been noticing these cypress knees and wanted to snag me one. So, he was a little shy about getting one of the very old ones, and thought that this one reminded him of the photos that I took, so he took a chainsaw and cut it off! I was so impressed when he showed me I was like "I'm so jealous!" And he was like "What the H for?! It's yours!"
I mean... for me, this little knob is just one of those things about life that, like al pacino in scarface, after many bullets, says "I'm still standing and guess what?" ... right before getting chopped off.
It makes me interested in doing cuts into wood on purpose... but I don't have a house with land to really practice on. Maybe when I'm back in WA.... trails off in thought...

Love it! Something very primal, subtle and cyclic about this. The reaching up....the folding in. Sweeeeet!!
