Thread: Protest & Protect. Locked Up Carbon.

I stuck my arbotech mini-carver together on a spare grinder & had a go it it on the log.

I also dug out a 100mm twist knot bevel brush & that works heaps better with less burning than the 75mm twist knot cup brush.

Still looking for a 'soul' so I haven't done anything worth another pic.

I narrowed my soul down to a short list of 13 & printed them out.

I reckon I am kidding myself if I think I can get close to any one in particular but I am aiming for something like this.

I took my pen & pencil & drew a rough outline & the started on it with the mini carver.

This is about an hour's work including the drawing.

The great meltdown got my last post midships...the gist...Going well Cliff...soul...good target, difficult to get...many artists depict a wise looking old man as soul Gnarled wood, furrowed faces, flowing hair and wavy beards all weave well together...not sure if women artists do so. Love the lips in what your aiming for...nearly could do without the rest of the face Some soul mates:

You can see how Picasso was influenced by those masks.
Watching your WIP with interest Cliff

OK, some more progress but it was too dark to get a good photo when I finished.
The flash photos seem to flatten it too much.

I have struck a bit of a problem in that the wall thickness where I chose to do the face is not even & I have had to 'flatten' the features 'cos I am starting to break through on the right (his left) side of the nose & under the eye.

I'll get some pics tomorrow.

yeah I was going to mention the pics don't do much for definition. The hole appearing sounds like an opportunity...sorry I'll shut up and watch

I got the first one yesterday before it got too dark & before I started going through to a hollow.

I didn't know that hollow was there... When I look down the inside from the top, that side all looks solid.
Anyway, it is rustic.

The lips are fairly 'cave man' at present, I will get a bent piece of wire & do some exploring through the holes & see if I can work out where that hollow goes.
If there is still plenty of timber around the mouth, I work it a bit more.

Gotta have something to do in the carpy weather you're getting eh Cliff!
Having just seen this piece in person, ya gotta give it to the man for persistence - I wouldn't have given a chunk of wood that rotten a second glance. The facial expression suits the theme nicely too, showing the pain that part of the world must have felt when white-man arrived. Keeping an eye on it Cliff

gotta admit I was thinking the same thing I asumed it was something to do with the theme
anyways, well done Cliff carving faces is challenging enough without having that piece to work with

As I said earlier, it is an ironic piece, some may even see it as sarcastic.

This will be a sad old soul chained to a rotten dead tree.

I am hoping that some will see that protesting & protecting the tree until it dies & rots does not lock the carbon up.

If the tree had been harvested at it's peak & milled & used for building something, the carbon would be locked up.
