Default Protest & Protect. Locked Up Carbon.

    G'day

This is going to be a work in progress.

I am doing a piece for an Art Exhibition to be held in Atherton in August this year & the theme is 'Protest & Protect'

I have a big hollow log from a Flindersia of some sort that was weakened by termites & knocked over in cyclone Larry.
When I saved it, the bark was already gone & it has been sitting on my shed veranda for about 3 years waiting for a good home.

My piece will be called 'Locked Up Carbon.'

I had already trimmed it square so it would stand up but today I got it out of the woodheap & pressure cleaned it… inside & out.

I am now soaking wet & have dirt in my hair, eyes & ears.

I have blown off most of the dirt & rotten timber so now I’ll let it dry & attack it with the power tools tomorrow. (maybe)
    Cliff.

    Intruiging to say the least.

A Philistine like myself would cut it into 3 varying lengths and plant Bromeliads in it!

I thought about making bird boxes out of it but the bloody possums would just move in.

Looks like the termites got most of the carbon out anyway, but I am also eagerly waiting to see what you will be able to pull off from there. Certainly challenging.

Good on you Cliff. Grab a power tool, shut your eyes and in to it.
Waiting to see the next photo.

Nuh, all in my head at this stage.

It is going to appear to be an ironic or even sarcastic piece to some people.

I have 2 pieces of rusty chain that will be wrapped around it before it goes on display.

Some of it will be left the way it is & some of it will be cleaned up & worked to show off the timber still hidden inside.

    OK, progress.

First I started with an Industrial Woodcarver on an angle grinder using the guard as a depth gauge & then polished it up a bit with a stiff knotted wire cup wheel on another angle grinder.

Slow work but it looks like what I want.

The timber polishes well with the wire wheel but it tends to burnish black if you don't keep moving. See the close up pic below.
I reckon it is rustic enough to stand a few blackened tips.

That little bit in the post above took about 45 to 50 minutes to do & I 'eat' a heap of flying wood chips doing it so I decided to change tools.

I got a new plug for my little chainsaw, (it has been mucking up when it gets hot) & attacked it with that.

Wow, that was heaps faster & I didn't cop a stream of chips flying back at me.

I started roughing it out trying to show up some of the termite work but I wanted to keep a 'head' shape for a face or mask.

I stopped to replace the chain for a sharper one & put some more fuel & oil in the saw & when I stepped back & looked at it, the 'head' had shoulders as well.

With another tank of fuel & a sharp chain I started in to refine the head & shoulders but had to call it a day due to failing light.

Although this happened over a period of an hour & a half, I spent a fair bit of time servicing the chainsaw so that is really less than an hours work.

I am happy so far, what do you think?
