Hello ..... I'm allen and I have been doing woodworking for 30+ years but have never really did any carving. NOW I have a friend that wants to commission me to do a stand for a custom Japanese Katana Sword that he made by hand. MY problem is ...... I am pretty sure I can do it but what wood would I use to make it the best I can. The base and the top of the stand need to look like a Cherry blossom flower and the guy prefers dark woods.

    Can anyone offer advice??

    Thank you
    Allen

Mmm, the first idea that comes to me would be to use cherry, for cherry blossom flowers. Nice to carve, pretty good finish, and stain could do the rest to darken the wood.
The quesion is what woods can you get ?

I thought cherry too, from a big old tree. Gradation of dark(base) to light (top) would be nice. A diagonal cut slab/blank can help. Japanese carvers traditionally favoured a lot of wavy grain movement. Don't know what's in nth Carolina to suit. Few things in mind I have in my shed... Rosewood? Popping by Nimbin any time soon?
