Rays can sometimes bite
Hi,
Got my thumb bitten by the bandsaw roughing out this one. Alright, it wasn't a ray yet, but in fact it already was in my mind. Fortunately I didn't damage any bone or tendon, just had a bit of sewing...
It's stylized. I'm trying to have fun going from concave to convex shapes.
So I first made this litte shape

and did the ray after. It's made of spalted basswood, 19cm width.

Nice fluid curves Copeau.
Is the spalted wood considered more exotic?

Beautiful lines. I would have been nervous around that cracked area on the wing/flipper. Did you reinforce it with anything before you started?
Sorry to hear about your bandsaw episode. Those can be nasty as its never a clean cut. Time for a tetanus shot!

Thanks for your kind words.
Well, it wasn't cracked when I started. Wood wasn't dry enough (again) but it was a "chainsaw scrap" I wasn't sure I could do something with. I thought it wouldn't crack as it's quite a thin piece.
Spalted parts are harder to carve and possibly less flexible when drying. But the underside is healthy so I wasn't too worried.
PS : I'm ok for tetanus 'till 2015

I don't know how got those beautiful lines with such a thin piece but it looks great. How do go selling your work over there? or do you keep
your carvings.
I usually manage to put a bit of DNA on most my carvings with little nicks and cuts but that one sounds nasty, glad you didn't hit a tendon
or you'd be out of action for a while.

I mostly had commissions so far. So i try to both explore and produce a few pieces to show my work in the summer. I plan to make some craft fairs (can find more and more "old professions" fairs these last years), and know a couple of art/craft shops where i can put some. I'll see, even if my work is not very homogenic in terms of style. I'm still searching for myself.

My apologies. I thought that I had posted my compliments on this carving.
The sweep suggests motion to me. Any moment in that time is what really appeals to me in a carving.
My D1 has seen big rays, scuba diving. She says that their graceful flight through the sea is a marvel to behold.
I, too, am making plans to try to sell my carvings, perhaps a discussion in a new thread?

Just thought I'd show these two pics, a couple of the many photo's my son has of these majestic creatures. He worked in Coral Bay as a snorkel guide and said the rays liked to put on a show, the upside down one was a ray doing a barrel roll right in front of him.
Copeau, just shows the great job you down on getting the lines right.

fantastic pictures ! fantastic job !
If I dive in the river nearby, I can only see a dark brown greenish flat screen in front of my eyes. It's never clear because of the hydroelectric dams.
