Repair of Carved Birds
At the club meeting on Sat a woman came in with a very sentimental and beautiful Rosewood carving, originally carved from a single piece of timber, in two large and many tiny pieces hoping someone could fix it for her. Apparently she knocked it off the shelf whilst cleaning breaking all the legs, the beak and tail feathers.
Anyway, I agreed to have a go at fixing it. Started gluing the bigger pieces with epoxy, then when set, slowly added the "non supporting" bits with Titebond II. Unfortunately she was also missing a bit, but I had a suitably coloured Honduran piece amongst my collection, so carved a piece to suit. I then filled the various little holes (broken/torn grain) with some filler, before sanding again. This brought out the underneath colour, it had obviously changed over the years, so I needed to match stain this area again as close as possible. I then finished the whole carving with a few coats of Tung Oil giving it a finish similar to what it was originally.
It will take a few days for the oil to dry in this weather before she can pick it up. It looks pretty good to me so she should be happy with result.

Me too. I'd be interested to hear your client's comments when she sees it.

Me too! You have done a beautiful job!
Just a suggestion though, as carved, it does have a very small base in comparison to its height and it could easily happen again? Could you suggest to the owner that you could make a base that does not 'compete' with the sculpture ( different colour to match the shelf not the rosewood, polished brass?) so that it would be more stable? It is a beautiful piece and the next fall may not be as reparable.
