    Default Request from a Mother.

This message has been copied (with permission) from an American BB. Lets see if you Aussie carvers can help out.

    http://www.woodworking.org/cgi-bin/ubboard/Ultimate.cgi

    Hi Folks,

John Lucas, who has recently joined us on the boards, forwarded the information
below. John received an e-mail from the lady and passed it on to me with her
permission. I have removed references to the lady's identity, but John and I do have
her contact information. From the sounds of the letter, it seems that she has embarked
on a final journey that is sad, but at the same time; inspirational:

    quote:

I am a novice to this field, and haven't worked with carving since a kid.

I am attempting to carve a chess set (figurines), and board (box to fold
close), with 'Angels' as the theme...actually I would need to complete two
    sets, one for
each of my sons. A legacy from me to them. Something to protect them in
spirit, soothe them in play and relaxation, and remembrance of their mom.
    My time is
limited as I have been diagnosed with cancer, so if you would please direct
me to what I would need, I would greatly appreciate this. According to the
    site I
found you on, they seem to believe you are very very serious about your
wood workings...so this is why I choose you to ask for professional advice
    and guidance.

I am limited on time and funds, but would like your suggestions on tools
and wood for such a venture of creation.

I thank you kindly for any attention towards my goal of making these two
Angel chess sets for my sons...by the way I taught them chess from a
very young age and they are now 24 and 21 years old.

I know we have some excellent and very knowledgeable carvers who might be able to
properly advise this lady regarding all the factors she has asked about.

If you would like to help her out, please e-mail me at [email protected] and I'll
obtain her permission to put you in direct contact with her.

Thanks John for letting us know about this!

Two very compassionate people have guided me here for help. I have read the posted
query of Mr Chuck Ring, and this is why I am here.

I am novice at wood working and have hopes of completing two hand carved wood
sets for my two sons as a legacy for them to remember me by.
I have some creative talents, but no knowledge of where to start this venture.

I would like any input and suggestions as to what tools, wood, etc. that I would need
to complete this quest of mine.

I am very limited on time and funds, as mentioned from the letter posted with Mr.
Chuck Ring, but feel confident that I could and would complete this in time.

Size of the figurines do not matter.
My thoughts unless you have some of your own to suggest are as follows:
    Pawns- cherubs
    Castle- clouds
Knight- a Pegasus (since he is winged)
Bishop- smaller angels than the King and Queen, in different garb.

A folding close board to store chess pieces in to match set. I think this would be the
easiest part of all to creat...so will save to last.

I am open to any suggestions though and helpful hints

I am aware that doing angels with the wings might be very hard with hopes of
notbreaking any piece off while carving...so this too is another reason why I need
    someones help and guidance.

I thank you all for your patience and caring, along with your devotion to one of Mother
    Natures finest creations...WOOD

    Sincerely Grateful,
    Georgiann

Not wanting to sound callous but my suggestion is that Georgiann contact the The National Wood Carvers Association (of America) through Chip Chats: http://www.chipchats.org there are over 56,000 members and probably a number within a few blocks of where she lives. She obviously needs local help (and soon) not long distance help.

The timbers, tools, etc. that are suggested or recommended from here may not be readily available in the part of the US that she lives so local knowlege and assistance will be a definate plus. I am sure that the US carvers would flock to help.

Leave this to those who can really help.
    Cheers
    Neil
